Activities and approaches to research and teaching.

“Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose. It is a seeking that he who wishes may know the cosmic secrets of the world and they that dwell therein.”

-Zora Neale Hurston

On Research…

I develop and implement qualitative and mixed methods research designs to explore postsecondary student success policies and outcomes.  My research agenda centers culture and equity and includes mentorship and student success, academic integrity education, and knowledge acquisition/dissemination in higher education. Among other projects, I am currently engaged in research on increasing access and completion for underrepresented, underprepared, or low-income students in postsecondary education. I am specifically interested in the role of equity in learning, assessment, and academic integrity and how these impact the outcomes for academically underserved students.

“Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it”.

-Marian Wright Edelman

On Teaching…

I am dedicated to providing a rigorous, active, and engaged learning environment respectful of student differences and experiences. It is my responsibility to introduce both traditional and alternative sources of content into the classroom to enhance engagement . Students who find practical applications to abstract concepts find enthusiasm in coursework. I believe students are at their best when allowed to critically engage in real time. I celebrate student successes and support student challenges both academically, and as coursework applies to the professional setting. In this way, students gain a personal connection to the material, turning the classroom into a learning laboratory. Using these connections, I aim to include the unique lived experiences of each student in my courses to create an experience that is meaningful and tailored to the needs of a particular class. I incorporate a variety of tools both online and face to face, to allow students to participate in ways that feel comfortable. I am responsive, and respond to feedback early and often. It is a privilege to teach, and I approach the work with care, honor, and integrity.
